Sheep in winter at Bryameadow Farm, OrkneyKringla Apartments are owned and operated by Orcadians, Dave and Kay Morgan, who warmly welcome visitors and share their love of Orkney. We pride ourselves in giving our visitors the best, most comfortable experience we can and aim for a high standard. We have been in the self-catering business for over 25 years and thoroughly enjoy meeting new people and making new friends along the way. Orcadians are renowned for their hospitality and you will quickly find yourselves part of this friendly community.

Farming is our main business. We have cattle and sheep at Bryameadow Farm, just 3 miles from Kringla Apartments, therefore allowing us to be nearby if you have any problems. We have a wind turbine on the farmland to offset our energy usage on the farm and at Kringla, which is all electric.

Farming at Bryameadow, OrkneyKay’s family have farmed in Orkney for many generations. In fact her family tree can be traced as far back as records allow, and she is 100% Orcadian! Kay worked in the travel business, and has travelled the world, giving her an in depth understanding of what visitors are looking for when choosing accommodation. Her deep held goal is to provide quality accommodation at an affordable price. You will find a warm welcome, and a genuine interest in helping make your holiday a memorable experience. She will help plan itineraries, find a sheltered beach, or advise on the best places to walk. If she does not know the answer herself she knows who to ask!

Trout fishing in OrkneyDave is a keen trout fisherman, and is always happy to give advice and share his local knowledge. He will help find the best boats and guide you to the best location for the direction of wind or cloud cover. He can also advise on sea fishing in the local area. Dave can provide information on shooting the geese, which are proving to be a problem on Orkney farms.

Dave and Kay have brought up their family of three at the farm. Their two older children have now flown the nest, but their youngest son is still at school and rears chickens for laying the best eggs you will ever taste!

Whalebone at Birsay with Brough of Birsay in backgroundKringla, in old Norse, means ring or circle, and is often applied as place name to anything circular in shape. According to Gregor Lamb’s ‘Orkney Wordbook’ it also means to cuddle up; as in a Mother and her child. We chose this name for our newly converted doctor’s surgery because Kringla was the name of a deep hole in the meadows at Swannay, Birsay, where Dave grew up. He still farms land in the area. We hope that your stay at Kringla will be cosy and relaxing, just as the Norse name implies.

Kringla consists of three beautiful quality apartments in the small friendly village of Dounby, central to most of the main visitor attractions. Very close to a well stocked grocery store, fuel station, hotel, butcher and more.

  • It's really well located for the major sights and every direction the road takes has led to great adventures!  We have been to Skara Brae, with the super beach at Skaill Bay.  We loved the informative 1pm tour @ Ness of Brodgar and wandered the stones @ Stenness too.  The tales of graffiti (Viking) in Maeshowe were fun......too many visits to list all over Mainland & down over the Churchill Barriers.  Lovely to return each evening to such a well equipped, cosy and excellently maintained flat.

  • A lovely place to stay for our week's holiday in Orkney.  Kringla had everything that we needed, and it was nice and warm to come back to after exploring!  Thanks for making us welcome.  We would love to come back and would recommend to our family and friends. :)

  • We've had a fabulous week.  Far too many highlights to list here!  Kringla has been an excellent base for exploring and we have felt at home here.  Many thanks Kay.

  • Our second visit to Kringla.  Now that we have discovered this lovely comfortable, well equipped apartment, centrally located, across the road from the Co-op, near the pub….well, what’s not to like?  Last time we were in Kringla 3 upstairs, which was slightly bigger rooms and possibly lighter with bigger windows – but really not much to choose between apartments. Kay, a splendid host.

  • This was a perfect base from which we headed off in all directions.  The accommodation and facilities at Kringla and in Dounby have been fantastic.  The bulletin each day meant we enjoyed the Birsay Dig, the event in the Library, the country dancing and Accordion and Fiddle Club in Kirkwall.  We arrived in sunshine and had a spectacular sunset.

  • Fantastic Apartments (we took two for a shooting party).  Very comfortable and warm and very well appointed.  Kay was very efficient through the booking process and very helpful during our stay.  Dounby now seems to have all the essentials for daily life without frequent trips to Kirkwall.  Brilliant!

  • Kringla has been a wonderful holiday home.  This is our first visit to Orkney and we have enjoyed every minute, there is so much to see that a week is not long enough.  We will most certainly be singing the praises of Orkney and Kringla to our friends.

  • Thank you Kay for such comfortable and extremely well appointed accommodation (with the all-important cafetiere!). I hope it will not be too long until we return.

  • Kay’s welcome was warm and informative. The welcome pack a very nice touch with beautiful eggs from their farm. Happy to recommend Kringla as a great place to stay!

  • Searched for 3 days to find something – anything that wasn’t perfect here – and failed.  Kringla just could NOT be better. Thank you.
